Nordicoutdoorbrands.
A selection of outdoor brands from Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland, with their current ownership stated plainly.

01
Why the category exists
Nordic outdoor brands were not built as lifestyle propositions. Most began as suppliers to people who had no alternative: fishermen, foresters, ski patrols, military units and mountain rescue. Helly Hansen began with oilskins for Norwegian seafarers in 1877; Devold has been knitting wool in Ålesund since 1853; Fjällräven began with a rucksack frame built for carrying weight over long distances.
That origin still shapes the category commercially. Product cycles are long, technical claims are specific rather than atmospheric, and the strongest brands hold a narrow position — wool, shells, packs, poles, footwear grip — instead of covering a full outdoor range.
It also explains why the category consolidated. Technical outdoor manufacturing is capital-intensive and export-dependent, and several of the names below now sit inside larger groups. Where that has happened, it is stated in the brand's row rather than left implied.

Selected brands
Apparel and shell garments
Brands whose core position is clothing built for weather rather than for appearance, several with documented supply histories to professional users.
Helly Hansen
Norway · Technical apparel and workwear · est. 1877
Acquired but active
Sailing, ski and professional workwear brand founded by a sea captain in 1877 and still headquartered in Oslo, owned since June 2025 by the American listed group Kontoor Brands.
Helly Hansen is the clearest example of a Nordic brand whose identity stayed in Norway while its ownership moved abroad — and moved twice. The professional side of the business, offshore, marine and industrial workwear, is a larger part of it than the consumer range suggests.

Norrøna
Norway · Technical outerwear · est. 1929
Family-owned technical outerwear house, founded in 1929 and still run by the founding family from outside Oslo.
Norrøna sits at the premium end of Nordic outdoor and has stayed independent while most of its peers were sold. Product development is organised around named activity ranges rather than seasonal collections, which is unusual in the category.

Bergans of Norway
Norway · Packs and expedition equipment · est. 1911
Acquired but active
Pack, tent and expedition-clothing brand built on a 1908 rucksack frame patent, with a documented expedition history from 1911 onwards, owned since 2021 by a Norwegian sports-retail group.
Bergans is a rare case where the founding artefact is a patent rather than a shop: the external frame rucksack. Its equipment accompanied Amundsen's South Pole party in 1911 and the 1922 British Everest expedition. Its current owner also runs the retail chains it sells through, which is worth knowing before treating the brand as an independent counterparty.

Devold of Norway
Norway · Merino wool layers · est. 1853
Acquired but active
Merino wool base-layer maker from the west coast of Norway, founded in 1853 and acquired by the listed Fenix Outdoor group between 2025 and 2026.
Devold is a wool business first and an apparel brand second, which is why the ownership change matters: it gives a listed Swedish group its largest wool platform. Knitting moved to Lithuania in 1998 while the brand and design stayed in Langevåg.

Kari Traa
Norway · Women's sports apparel · est. 2002
Acquired but active
Women's ski and wool base-layer brand founded in 2002 by the Olympic mogul skier whose name it carries, now held inside the Oslo group Active Brands.
The brand was built around a women-only range at a point when technical skiwear was largely sold as unisex product with a smaller cut. Its patterned wool base layers remain the commercial core, and its buying and distribution decisions now sit with a private-equity-backed group in Oslo rather than in Voss.

Fjällräven
Sweden · Packs and outdoor apparel · est. 1960
Pack and outdoor apparel brand founded in 1960 in northern Sweden, now the largest brand in the listed Fenix Outdoor group.
Fjällräven is the Nordic outdoor brand that travelled furthest from its category: the Kånken daypack, introduced in 1978 for schoolchildren, turned it into an urban consumer brand while the group also owns technical brands and Nordic retail chains.

Haglöfs
Sweden · Outdoor apparel and equipment · est. 1914
Acquired but active
Swedish outdoor brand founded in 1914, sold by a Swedish investment company to Japan's Asics in 2010 and on to a Hong Kong investment firm in 2023.
Haglöfs shows how often a mid-sized Nordic outdoor brand can change hands: a private-equity owner, then a Japanese sports group, then an Asian investment firm — with the brand itself continuing largely unchanged in the market.

66°North
Iceland · Technical outerwear · est. 1926
Icelandic outerwear brand founded in 1926 as a fishermen's clothing factory in the Westfjords, supplying Icelandic search-and-rescue teams since 1928.
66°North began as protective clothing for a fishing fleet and has moved towards design-led outerwear, presenting at Copenhagen Fashion Week around its centenary. The rescue-service supply relationship is the part of its history that is documented rather than styled.

Equipment and hardware
Brands whose products are objects rather than garments: stoves, carrying systems, poles, gloves and footwear built around a single technical problem.
Primus
Sweden · Outdoor cooking equipment · est. 1892
Acquired but active
Portable stove maker founded in 1892, whose equipment was carried on Amundsen's South Pole and Hillary's Everest expeditions.
Primus is an equipment business with an unusually documented provenance, and a recent example of brand consolidation inside Sweden: it moved from one Swedish outdoor group to another in 2023 rather than being sold abroad.

Hestra
Sweden · Gloves · est. 1936
Glove maker from Småland, family-owned since 1936, supplying alpine ski and mountain gloves through specialist retail.
Hestra is a single-category business, which is the point: it controls leather selection and production itself rather than licensing manufacture, and sells through ski specialists rather than general sporting goods.

Thule
Sweden · Transport and carrying equipment · est. 1942
Roof box, bike carrier and outdoor luggage group, founded in 1942 and listed on Nasdaq Stockholm since 2014.
Thule is the largest listed pure outdoor-equipment business in the Nordics and sells mainly through automotive and sports retail rather than its own stores — a distribution model closer to a component supplier than a lifestyle brand.

- 1942

Swix
Sweden · Nordic skiing equipment · est. 1946
Ski wax and pole maker whose colour-coded wax system, introduced in 1946, became the standard the sport still uses. Swedish in origin, Norwegian-owned and Lillehammer-based since the 1960s and 1970s.
Swix is a technical supplier that became a consumer brand. Its commercial position rests on the racing side of cross-country skiing, where wax choice is a competitive input rather than an accessory. It appears on the Norwegian page as a Norwegian-owned and Norwegian-run business, not as a Norwegian-origin one.

Klättermusen
Sweden · Mountaineering apparel · est. 1975
Mountaineering apparel maker based in Åre, working on repairability and fabrics without fluorinated treatments. The brand dates itself to 1975, when a group of climbers in Umeå began making their own equipment; it was built into a commercial gear business during the 1980s.
Klättermusen occupies the smallest and most technical end of Swedish outdoor. Its material policy predates the wider industry's move away from fluorinated water repellents, which is the substantive reason it appears here.

Icebug
Sweden · Traction footwear · est. 2001
Footwear maker built on a single problem — grip on ice and winter trails — with studded outsoles as its core product.
Icebug is the one entry here whose category exists because of the Nordic winter rather than being marketed with it: studded urban and trail footwear is a genuine local product need that turned into an export line.

Suunto
Finland · Instruments and wearables · est. 1936
Acquired but active
Finnish instrument maker founded on a liquid-filled compass patent in the 1930s, now producing dive computers and sports watches under Chinese ownership.
Suunto is a precision-instrument company that moved into wearables, and one of the few Nordic hardware brands to keep manufacturing at home through a change of foreign ownership.

- 1936

This is a selection, not a complete list of Nordic outdoor brands, and the order carries no meaning. Several well-known brands were left out of this pass because current ownership could not be confirmed from a primary source.
03
Ownership patterns worth understanding
Three structures recur in this category, and they matter more than country of origin when you are deciding who you are actually dealing with.
Group consolidation
Fenix Outdoor holds Fjällräven and took majority control of Devold in 2025. Fenix is listed in Stockholm but domiciled in Switzerland, which is a useful reminder that a listing venue and a corporate home are not the same thing. Kari Traa sits inside the Oslo group Active Brands, and Primus inside Silva, which is itself backed by the investment firm Verdane.
Sale outside the Nordics
Helly Hansen was bought by Canadian Tire in 2018 and sold on again to the American apparel group Kontoor Brands, completing in June 2025. Suunto passed to the Chinese group Liesheng in 2022. Haglöfs went to Japan's Asics in 2010 and on to the Hong Kong investment firm LionRock Capital in December 2023. In each case the brand continued largely unchanged in the market, which is why the change of hands is easy to miss — and why one acquisition date is rarely the current position.
Retained family or domestic ownership
Norrøna is still run by the founding family, now in its fourth generation. Hestra remains family-owned. Swix, Swedish in origin, has been held by the Norwegian investment company Ferd since 1978. 66°North is privately held in Iceland by the two owners who took the business over in 2011. Bergans is Norwegian-owned, but by the retail group Sport Holding rather than independently.
Two brands here carry unresolved questions. Klättermusen dates itself to 1975 while other accounts date the formal company to 1984, and its shareholding is not published; Icebug describes itself as independently owned while a 2026 profile describes part-ownership by a Taiwanese manufacturer. Neither is resolved by choosing a version: the conflict is stated and no owner is published for either.
04
What this means for distribution
For anyone selling into or alongside this category, the practical consequence of group ownership is that buying decisions may sit outside the country the brand comes from. A Norwegian brand inside a Swedish-listed, Swiss-domiciled group is unlikely to make sourcing decisions in Oslo.
The independent brands work the opposite way: decisions are fast and personal, but capacity is limited and partner selection is conservative. Nordic outdoor retail is also concentrated, so a small number of chains and specialist retailers determine whether a brand reaches consumers at all.
Selection methodology
- Brands are selected editorially. Nothing on this page is a ranking, a rating or a measure of size, quality or popularity.
- A brand is included only when its origin, its founding period where published, and its current ownership could be checked against the brand's own material or its parent's reporting.
- Where a fact could not be traced to a usable source, the field is left out rather than estimated. Uncertainty is stated in the page text.
- Ownership is recorded separately from origin. A brand founded in the Nordics may be owned elsewhere, and that is noted rather than smoothed over.
- Where revenue appears it is labelled with the entity it belongs to. Parent or group figures are never presented as brand figures.
Sources
- Primary sources first: company and brand websites, annual reports, stock-exchange releases and acquisition announcements.
- Business media is used only to establish a transaction or a date, and is marked as such in the source list.
- Each brand record carries the date it was last checked. Records older than a year are flagged for re-verification internally.
